James "Jim" Orenthal, is a fictional character from the American sitcom, According to Jim. He is portrayed by Jim Belushi. He is the title character of the series. His character is considered a macho "everyman" who adores his children.[1]

The name is taken from O.J. Simpson, whose initials stand for Orenthal James.

Background[]

Jim grew up with his sister and mother after his father left him at a young age. He got into a lot of trouble which taught him how to scheme and to keep out of trouble. He has also been trained as a classical ballroom dancer. He married his wife Cheryl and works as a contractor and has his own contracting business with his brother in law Andy. James "Jim" Orenthal, (whereby Orenthal is his second name. The family's surname has never been revealed during the show's run.) is an abrasive but lovable suburban father. Much like his real life counterpart, Jim's character is noted as a fan of blues music, as well as the Chicago Bears, Chicago Cubs, Chicago Bulls, and the Chicago Blackhawks. Together with his wife Cheryl, whose second name is Mabel, they have three children: Ruby, Gracie and Kyle. In the end of the 7th season they become proud parents of the twins Jonathan and Gordon. The family residence is 412 Maple Street, Chicago, Illinois, United States.

Jim often finds himself in messy situations because his laziness inclines him to search for alternative ways of doing things with less effort. While Cheryl's brother Andy may be Jim's best friend, her sister Dana frequently teams up with Cheryl against Jim.

Trivia[]

  • When Jim was thirteen, he believed everyone forgotten his birthday. So when he got home, instead he celebrates it by "giving himself a present" by looking at his mom's bra catalog and begins to masturbates. But everybody jumped up to surprise him but were shocked to see him masturbating, resulting for Jim to hate his own birthday.
  • He is similar to Al Bundy from Married With Children and Tim the Tool Man Taylor from Home Improvement.
  • He has a worry of his children growing up to live particular lives such as:
    • Kyle either becoming gay or a Packers fan.
    • Ruby and Gracie becoming strippers (possibly a fear of them going to be like his sister Roxanne).
  • Jim is a huge fan of Mike Ditka, a former coach for his favorite team, the Bears. He met him at a car dealership where he was the owner of the place.
  • When Jim was a child, he was a actor in a sex ed video that was shown at schools such as Ruby's school. The director told him it was a horror movie so he acted like he was scared.
  • His mom had him take dance classes when he was a kid. The main reason he did so well, was to just get close to his teacher's breasts when dancing with her.
  • Jim Belushi said that if he were to ever reboot According to Jim, he'd want Jim and Cheryl to be separated and for Andy to be Jim's boss.
